Prima „sticla†folosita de oameni a fost obsidianul, o roca vulcanica foarte lucioasa, uneori transparenta intr-o masura, cu nuante inchise de culoare. Acest mineral a fost folosit la fabricarea cutitelor, varfurilor de sageata, bijuteriilor si banilor. Ulterior, in secolul IV i. Hr., in Mesopotamia si Egipt, s-a inceput fabricarea primelor soiuri de faianta, ca in jurul anului 1 i. Hr. sa se inventeze tehnica de suflat in productia de sticla, ceea ce a contribuit substantial la grabirea procesului de productie, la cresterea temperaturii de prelucrare a mineralelor si la obtinerea de sticla tot mai clara.
